Frank Lampard has switched his allegiance from Lionel Messi to Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the 2021 Ballon d’Or award ceremony
Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has weighed in on the eternal Messi versus Ronaldo argument ahead of the 2021 Ballon d’Or awards ceremony. The question of who is better between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi has divided opinion and remains the hottest question in the world of football due to the stars’ exploits and longevity in the game.
Lampard revealed that he has always been a Lionel Messi fan but has now shifted his weight behind the Portuguese, stating that Ronaldo’s knack for influencing big games such as semifinals and finals has given him the edge over his Argentine rival. The former Chelsea midfielder made his comments on Sky Sports as a reaction to Gary Neville’s and Jamie Carragher’s argument.
“You know what, I’ve always been a Messi man. And then I watched your debate with Carra [Carragher] actually recently,” Lampard said.
“I actually think for what Ronaldo’s output and actual numbers and goals in big finals and semi-finals and that we’ve seen, I think I might be given him the edge now.”
Ronaldo and Messi are contenders once again as the 2021 Ballon d’Or is handed out on Monday November 29. Messi is the record winner, scooping the award on six occasions in the past ahead of Ronaldo’s five previous triumphs. There are other strong contenders for this year’s award, with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski thought to be in pole position, while Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is also in with a shout for football’s biggest individual award.
